MSU Looks to Right the Ship in Lincoln Against Nebraska

December 8, 2023: It's no secret that Michigan State's basketball team is reeling. After a summer of high expectations, the team has been largely disappointing in not developing into the title contender most had expected. Although the team has shown a lot of times of promise, those times are often sandwiched between unimpressive offensive performances.
The offense looks stagnant most games which is exacerbated by inconsistent rebounding and defense. Also, the much ballyhooed transition game that was talked about during the offseason has failed to materialize. The Spartans are now one of the slowest teams in the Big Ten and perhaps by extension, struggling mightily behind the arc.
They head into Lincoln much like last season, following up a surprising home Big Ten opener at home. Hopefully, like last year, they find a way to 'get right' and come back to East Lansing with a win before their next matchup after finals against Baylor.
November 7, 2023: Michigan State hosted James Madison to open the 2023-24 season and came away with a x-x win tonight.

Michigan State Falls to Wisconsin in Big Ten Opener 70-57

December 5, 2023: Michigan State drops its opener to the Wisconsin Badgers at home, 70-57. The game was disappointing on so many levels. The Spartans were out rebounded, out shot, and generally out hustled all over the floor. It was a surprisingly uninspiring effort from a team of veterans who looked not the least bit prepared after a six day rest.
 
Once again, MSU had a bad open to the game requiring a huge effort from Tyson Walker to try and pull them back. Again, Tyson almost did it but despite having multiple possessions only down 3 points, Michigan State was unable to get over the hump and fell behind never to approach the Badgers again.

MSU to Open Big Ten Play Hosting Wisconsin

December 4, 2023: The early abbreviated Big Ten play has begun and has already had some interesting developments. Purdue lost its opener in Evanston to Northwestern which is exactly what happened to the Spartans last year (although it was at home).
This year, the Badgers come to visit and they're coming off a big victory over #3 Marquette at home. The game will be a challenge and if Michigan State wants to have the season it hopes to have, it needs to start with a win here.

MSU Blasts Georgia Southern in Last Tune Up Before Big Ten Play Begins

November 30, 2023: On Tuesday evening, Michigan State played the Georgia Southern Eagles from the Sun Belt Conference and did exactly what we hoped they would do - win easily. This game was really never in doubt but there were definitely some very interesting story lines that came from the game.
The top story was that AJ Hoggard was replaced in the starting lineup with Tre Holloman. And Tre responded well finishing with 7 points on 2-4 shooting and 10 assists to just 2 turnovers. Jeremy Fears Jr. spelled Tre and also played significant minutes to finish with 6 points and 10 rebounds including a few assists. Although ultimately AJ played the most minutes, it will be interesting to see where Izzo goes moving forward with respect to the role, rotation, and minutes for AJ.

Michigan State Readies for Big Ten with Warmup Against Georgia Southern

November 26, 2023: We are fast approaching the annual interruption of the nonconference schedule with a home and away Big Ten game. On December 5, MSU begins its march to a Big Ten title against Wisconsin, but first, it must face the Georgia Southern Eagles from the Sun Belt Conference.
It's the second team from the Sun Belt that the Spartans will have faced but this team is no where near the level of competition like James Madison. This will be an opportunity for MSU to build upon the small strides we saw in the Arizona game. Can they come out with the fire they showed in the second half against the Wildcats? Will the shooting finally start to come around?

Arizona Defeats MSU in Last Minute on Thanksgiving 72-66

November 24, 2023: Michigan State got to play a premium game on Thanksgiving Day after the Lions game against the Arizona Wildcats in Palm Springs, CA. Although the game was entertaining and the Spartans fought all the way back to take a late lead on the 'Cats, they ended up falling 72-66  with a 9-0 Arizona run. 
Things looked bleak in the first half with MSU going down by as many as 15 points. Fortunately, Tyson Walker willed them back into the game keeping contact with Arizona and cutting the lead to 7 before a last second three at the buzzer in the first half. In the second half, the script flipped with the Spartans as the aggressors on both ends of the court.

MSU Cruises to 81-49 Win Over Alcorn St. Behind Holloman’s Five 3s

November 19, 2023: Capping what was a very good weekend for MSU sports fans with a basketball victory over Butler Friday night, the football team winning a road game, the MSU hockey team sweeping #1 Wisconsin, and the Lions coming from behind to climb to 8-2 on the season, the win over Alcorn State was icing on the cake.
The Spartans were without leading scorer Tyson Walker but didn't need him as Tre Holloman had a career high 17 point behind 5/5 shooting from 3 to go along with five assists and 1 turnover and 2 steals. Aside from Tre's 3s came the highlight dunk of the season by Coen Carr who posterized a hapless Brave by going through him for a two handed dunk on his head.  This was a game Michigan State needed to gain some confidence and maintain their focus which they largely did.

Spartans Face Off Against Alcorn State

November 18, 2023: Alcorn State comes to visit the Breslin Sunday night in a tune up for MSU's premiere game against Arizona on Thanksgiving Day. The Braves are from the SWAC which is a traditional 16 seed in the NCAA tournament. In short, this shouldn't be a game that stresses Michigan State fans too much.
Alcorn State is a team this year that struggles on both ends of the court. Their profile is of a team that is challenged to score or defend - not the makings of a successful group. The only things they do well is get to the line (which they shoot poorly) and forcing turnovers through steals.

MSU Pounds Butler 74-54 in Get Right Game at Home

November 17, 2023: The Spartans badly needed a game where they could build upon the positives in the Duke loss and Butler had the unfortunate luck to be the victim of MSU's growth. In a game that Michigan State started out good offensively, Butler was never really in the game after about the 10 minute mark in the first half. MSU pulled away to lead by 12 into the break and never really looked back the rest of the way.
It was an emotional homecoming for Pierre Brooks II and one which did not see him play as well as we are sure he would have preferred. The Spartans held the Bulldogs to less than 30% shooting from the field and outrebounded them 52-42. Also, MSU continued to show growth on the offensive boards pulling down nearly 40% of their misses.
