September 23, 2024: The third PAC-12 team we have previewed is the Oregon Ducks as they shift to a deeper basketball league that they are used to. Oregon has had a tradition of boom and bust teams and with the close relationship with Phil Knight and Nike, there is every reason to believe Oregon will be competitive.
This year's team features some intriguing transfers along with a few valuable holdover pieces. As is the case with virtually every team in the Big Ten this year, there is a lot of uncertainty on how the pieces will come together. #11 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview: Building on Success for Hoiberg

September 19, 2024: The Nebraska Cornhuskers finally made it back to the NCAA Tournament last year - the first for Head Coach Fred Hoiberg - but it resulted in yet another loss. Nebraska still hasn't won an NCAA Tournament game despite 8 tries over the years.
It wasn't long ago that we talked about how maybe Fred Hoiberg would find himself on the hotseat in Lincoln. However, his team improved defensively and they added a fun and dynamic player in Keisei Tominaga as a starter the last two years and their fortunes changed. The task for Hoiberg is if he can find magic in the portal with multiple Big Ten transfers and finally win an NCAA game.

#12 USC Trojans Preview: Roster Turnover, New Coach, & New Conference

September 16, 2024: The USC Trojans are joining the Big Ten this year and although they are mostly thought of as a football power, they have some history of occasional success in basketball. Fans might recall MSU's matchup in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2023 with a talented and dangerous Trojan squad.
Well, the Trojans have overhauled the entire team this year as head coach Andy Enfield left for SMU and is being replaced by Eric Musselman from Arkansas. With Musselman come 13 new players mostly from the portal to try and rebuild the southern California team.

#13 Wisconsin Badgers Preview: Wisconsin Looks to Repeat as Big Ten (Tournament) Champs

September 12, 2024: Last year was a strange one for the Wisconsin Badgers. They started out blistering hot in the Big Ten behind tremendous athletic scoring of transfer AJ Storr with a halfway record of 8-1 and first place in the conference. Then the wheels (sort of) came off as they limped across the line to finish 11-9.
A bright note was despite the swoon the Badgers managed to knock off top seed, and national runner-up Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Unfortunately for Wisconsin they lost as a 5 seed in the opening round of the NCAAs to James Madison.

#14 Iowa Hawkeyes Preview: Is this Fran McCaffrey's Last Season in Iowa City?

September 9, 2024: After 5 straight years in the NCAA tournament, the Hawks missed the Tourney this year without the services of any of the Murray twins. It was a largely forgettable year for Iowa and head coach, Fran McCaffrey with a middle of the pack Big Ten finish and a team that statistically wasn't nearly as good as recent years.
The Hawkeyes struggled more than their usual abysmal self on defense and with a less than elite offense were relegated to the ho hum season. Of note for this year is the loss of starters Tony Perkins to Missouri and Patrick McCaffrey to Butler. The second being the most surprising as Fran is losing not only Patrick but his youngest son, Jack, who elected to go to Butler too.
The impression that Iowa doesn't have a lot in its cupboard and Fran getting up there in age certainly has us questioning the direction of this program and how many more years McCaffrey has at Iowa.

#15 Penn State Nittany Lions Preview: Looking to Improve on Last Year's Surprising Success

September 5, 2024: Head coach Mike Rhoades took over at Penn State after the premature departure of Micah Shrewsbury. He was left with pretty much a decimated roster and had to rebuild from transfers and a couple players from his previous coaching job.

#17 Washington Huskies Preview: Looking for a Sprinkle of Magic

August 29, 2024: The Big Ten welcomes in four teams from the PAC-12 this year which includes the Washington Huskies. Not only are the Huskies facing change by coming into a new league but they also have a new coach. Danny Sprinkle takes over for Mike Hopkins who only managed to go 12 games over .500 overall in seven seasons in Seattle. 
Sprinkle will largely take over an entirely new roster but one that includes transfer, Great Osobor, from Utah State who will be the corner piece of the program this year. Can Sprinkle find a way to turn his other transfers into a successful team this season? As with so many of these completely remade teams in the Big Ten - time will tell.

#18 Minnesota Golden Gophers Preview: Johnson Struggling to Get the Program on Track

August 26, 2024: The season isn't far away so it's time to start our previews and sneak peak into teams in the Big Ten's 18 teams. We always begin our trek following Rod's expectations from 18 to 1. This year, Rod will again project Minnesota as the cellar dweller.
Head coach, Ben Johnson, seems to be snake bit in Minneapolis. After an impressive inaugural season piecing together a bunch of mid major transfers to field a competitive team he followed it up with a disastrous season. 
However, last year a couple successful transfers and healthy Dawson Garcia put Minnesota far from the bottom of the conference with reason to hope for even better things this year. But the transfer portal and NBA came calling stripping the Gophers of most of their team.
So Johnson will once again try to cobble together a team to try and find a way to get this program back to prominence once again.

What We Learned From MSU's Spain Exhibition

August 20, 2024: Michigan State left for Spain for an exhibition basketball tour. College teams are only allowed to do this every 4 years or so but it had been 9 years for MSU since their last overseas trip. Coach Izzo felt it was time with a new point guard and five new players on the roster.
The Spartans opened up play with a close victory over the Madrid All-Stars on Thursday followed by a blowout win over the Valencia All-Stars on Sunday. The all-star teams are composed of various pro and semi-pro basketball players in the Spanish leagues. It is important to note that the composition of the teams are not the same from game to game making it hard to assess the level of competition each game and comparing results to other teams that might have played the same teams.
Despite the exhibition nature of the games we learned quite a bit about the players - more so even than what we could glean during Moneyball this summer.
